Summary

Background:

  • Limited research exists on the relationship between filariasis and human blood groups.
  • Understanding host factors like blood groups could offer insights into filariasis susceptibility and progression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between ABO and Rh(D) blood groups and filariasis.
  • To compare blood group distribution in individuals with filarial infection and disease versus healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • A preliminary study was conducted in an endemic area of bancroftian filariasis.
  • Blood groups (ABO and Rh(D)) were determined for 271 patients with filarial disease and 172 healthy controls.
  • Infection status (circulating microfilariae) and disease manifestations were recorded.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant relationship was observed between ABO or Rh(D) blood groups and filariasis infection.
  • Blood groups were found to be independent of filarial infection status, disease manifestation, and sex.
  • The studied population showed a high prevalence of Rh-positive individuals (95.05%).

Conclusions:

  • ABO and Rh(D) blood groups do not appear to influence susceptibility or resistance to bancroftian filariasis.
  • Filarial infection and blood group inheritance are independent factors in the studied population.
  • Further research may explore other host genetic factors in filariasis.
