    Background:

    • Tremor is a common movement disorder affecting a significant patient population.
    • Existing treatments often fail to provide adequate tremor reduction for approximately 25% of patients.
    • A new strategy is needed to effectively manage tremor symptoms.

    Observation:

    • Electromyographic (EMG) signals were used to detect tremor.
    • An iterative Hilbert transform was employed for tremor detection.
    • Electrical stimulation was applied to antagonist muscles in an out-of-phase manner.

    Findings:

    • Both motor (above threshold) and sensory (below threshold) stimulation were tested.
    • Significant tremor reduction (46%-81% for motor, 35%-48% for sensory) was observed in five out of six patients.
    • Sensory stimulation showed potential for tremor attenuation without causing muscle fatigue or discomfort.

    Implications:

    • Electrical stimulation below the motor threshold offers a viable approach for tremor suppression.
    • This method could lead to a new, non-fatiguing treatment for tremor patients.
    • Further development may provide an alternative therapeutic option for Parkinson disease and Essential tremor.
