Summary

Large Virchow-Robin spaces on MRI scans are common. While associated with age, hypertension, dementia, and white matter lesions, only age remained a significant factor in logistic regression analysis.

Background:

  • Virchow-Robin spaces are frequently observed on high-field Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans.
  • These spaces follow the path of penetrating arteries into the basal ganglia and cortical gray matter.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical significance and associations of Virchow-Robin spaces.
  • To determine the relationship between large Virchow-Robin spaces and various patient variables.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 816 MRI scans.
  • Grading of Virchow-Robin spaces and white matter lesions.
  • Comparison of patient variables (age, gender, white matter lesions, infarction, dementia, hypertension, atrophy) between groups with and without large Virchow-Robin spaces using Fisher exact test and logistic regression.
