Background:

  • Unpleasant stimuli processing occurs early (0-300 ms), but later cognitive processing of pleasant/unpleasant emotions (≥ 300 ms) remains unclear.
  • Behavioral Inhibition System (BIS) and Behavioral Activation System (BAS) traits correlate with unpleasant and pleasant responses, respectively.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Identify the time window for human pleasant/unpleasant emotional processing.
  • Investigate event-related potential (ERP) components correlated with BIS/BAS personality traits.

Main Methods:

  • Recorded ERPs in 29 men while presenting sounds.
  • Calculated BIS/BAS scores using the Japanese edition of the BIS/BAS questionnaire.

Main Results:

  • No significant correlation between overall BIS and BAS scores.
  • Significant positive correlation between N100 amplitude and BIS score.
  • Positive correlation between BAS fun seeking subscale score and LPP amplitude.

Conclusions:

  • Unpleasant emotion processing occurs early, evidenced by larger N100 in high BIS subjects.
  • Pleasant emotion processing involves later LPP, which was larger in high BAS subjects.
  • LPP augmentation in high BAS subjects may reflect ACC activity during pleasant emotions.
