This study surveyed livestock in central to northeastern Kenya for cystic echinococcosis (CE), finding different parasite species than previously known. The findings suggest a distinct epidemiological situation impacting human CE occurrence in the region.

Background:

  • Cystic echinococcosis (CE) research in Kenya historically focused on Turkana and Maasailand.
  • No prior data existed for CE in livestock from central to northeastern Kenya.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and genetic diversity of CE in livestock in a previously unsurveyed region of Kenya.
  • To compare findings with established CE foci in Kenya.

Main Methods:

  • Survey of 7,831 livestock carcasses (cattle, camels, goats, sheep).
  • Prevalence calculation for CE in each host species.
  • Molecular identification of Echinococcus species using RFLP-PCR of the mitochondrial nad1 gene.

Main Results:

  • CE prevalence varied by species: cattle (1.92%), camels (6.94%), goats (0.37%), sheep (4.62%).
  • Identified Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto, E. ortleppi, and E. canadensis.
  • E. ortleppi and E. canadensis were found in fertile cysts in cattle and camels, respectively, with E. ortleppi being a new record in goats.

Conclusions:

  • The CE epidemiological situation in central/northeastern Kenya differs significantly from Turkana and Maasailand.
  • The lower prevalence of E. granulosus s.s. may correlate with fewer human CE cases in this area.
