Classification of Epithelial Tissues: Simple Epithelium01:30

Classification of Epithelial Tissues: Simple Epithelium

12.2K
Simple epithelium consists of a single layer of cells that lines body cavities and blood vessels. The shape of the cells in the epithelium reflects the function of the tissue. Cells in simple squamous epithelium appear as thin scales with flat, elliptical nuclei that mirror the form of the cell.
Because of the thinness of the cells, simple squamous epithelium is present where the rapid passage of chemical compounds is observed. For example, the endothelium that lines the capillaries and vessels...

Classification of Epithelial Tissues: Stratified Epithelium

11.1K
Stratified epithelium consists of several stacked layers of cells. They provide the durability to withstand constant physical and chemical attacks. Stratified epithelium is named after the shape of the most apical layer of cells. Stratified squamous epithelium is the most common type found in the human body. In this tissue, the apical cells are squamous, whereas the basal layer contains either columnar or cuboidal cells. The basal cells divide to form new daughter cells, which gradually become...

Skin Cancer01:30

Skin Cancer

5.2K
Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. It is primarily caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide, and its incidence continues to rise.
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): BCC is the most common type of skin cancer, accounting for about 80% of cases. It typically develops in...

Cells of the Epidermis01:24

Cells of the Epidermis

7.2K
The epidermis is made of four or five layers of epithelial cells, depending on its location in the body. From deep to superficial, these layers are the stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum, and stratum corneum.
The cells in all these layers except the stratum basale are called keratinocytes, a type of cell that manufactures and stores the protein keratin. The keratinocytes in the stratum corneum are dead and regularly slough away, being replaced by cells from...

Surface Membrane Barriers01:18

Surface Membrane Barriers

3.0K
The skin and mucous membranes serve as the primary line of defense against pathogens by providing both physical and chemical protection. These barriers are essential in preventing the entry and establishment of microbes, thereby maintaining the integrity of the host.
The outer layer of the skin, the epidermis, is a robust barrier comprising layers of closely packed keratinized cells. This dense arrangement prevents microbes from penetrating the body. The periodic shedding of epidermal cells...

Classification of Epithelial Tissues: Glandular Epithelium01:20

Classification of Epithelial Tissues: Glandular Epithelium

16.1K
The glandular epithelium is made of one or more epithelial cells modified to synthesize and secrete chemical substances. Glandular epithelia can be classified based on cell number. Unicellular glands have individual secretory cells scattered across the epithelial monolayer. In contrast, multicellular glands consist of a hollow tubular duct attached to the cluster of secretory cells located in the deep pockets.
Multicellular glands are formed during early development when epithelial budding...

Summary

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma, a common salivary gland tumor, can occur in minor glands. This case details the successful surgical management of a high-grade variant in a young male patient.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Head and Neck Surgery
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Salivary gland tumors represent approximately 5% of head and neck malignancies.
  • Minor salivary gland tumors are typically malignant, accounting for 10-15% of all salivary gland neoplasms.
  • Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the second most common minor salivary gland tumor globally, often affecting females in their fifth decade, typically in the parotid gland, but the palate is a frequent site in minor glands.

Observation:

  • A rare case of high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma occurred in the right retromolar trigone of a 21-year-old male.
  • The tumor was treated with wide surgical excision, achieving a 1.5 cm margin.
  • Reconstruction involved a buccal fat pad and a pedicled lateral tongue flap, with temporal stripping and coronoidectomy to prevent post-surgical contraction.

Findings:

  • The surgical intervention for this high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma was successful.
  • The patient underwent a complex reconstruction procedure.
  • The patient is currently under regular follow-up.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering mucoepidermoid carcinoma in minor salivary glands, even in younger patients.
  • The described surgical and reconstructive techniques offer a viable approach for managing such tumors.
  • Effective management of minor salivary gland tumors requires a multidisciplinary approach and careful surgical planning.
