Summary

Cognitive interventions show no significant effects on cognition or mood in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients, despite high adherence. Further research is needed to establish efficacy and cost-effectiveness for MS cognitive health.

Background:

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) frequently causes cognitive impairments, impacting patient productivity and quality of life.
  • Cognitive interventions are explored as adjunctive therapies, but their effectiveness in MS remains debated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and meta-analyze the efficacy of cognitive interventions in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
  • To address limitations of previous meta-analyses by focusing exclusively on high-quality Randomized Clinical Trials (RCTs).

Main Methods:

  • A systematic search of multiple databases was performed to identify relevant Randomized Clinical Trials (RCTs).
  • Studies were selected based on low risk of bias to ensure methodological rigor.

Main Results:

  • Five studies, involving 139 participants, met the inclusion criteria.
  • No statistically significant evidence of intervention effects on cognition or mood was found at post-intervention or follow-up assessments.
  • High rates of intervention completion and adherence were observed.

Conclusions:

  • This meta-analysis, the first to exclusively include low-bias RCTs in MS, found no current evidence for cognitive intervention efficacy.
  • Research on the efficacy, cost-effectiveness, and feasibility of cognitive interventions in MS is nascent.
  • Despite promising adherence, further high-quality research is warranted, with recommendations for improved study design provided.
