Insights
We sequenced the genome of a rare Cronobacter sakazakii strain (ST40, CC45). This foodborne pathogen is found in infant formula but has only been linked to one clinical case.
Area of Science:
- Microbiology
- Genomics
- Food Safety
Background:
- Cronobacter sakazakii is a foodborne pathogen causing severe illness, particularly in vulnerable populations like neonates and the elderly.
- This bacterium is frequently detected in food processing environments and powdered infant formula.
Purpose of the Study:
- To present the complete genome sequence of a specific, rare Cronobacter sakazakii strain, designated ST40, CC45.
- To characterize the genomic features of this strain found in food products.
Main Methods:
- Whole-genome sequencing was performed on the Cronobacter sakazakii ST40, CC45 strain.
- Bioinformatic analyses were conducted to assemble and annotate the genome sequence.
Main Results:
- The genome sequence of the rare Cronobacter sakazakii ST40, CC45 strain was successfully obtained and assembled.
- This strain is prevalent in food processing facilities and infant formula, despite its limited clinical association.
Conclusions:
- The availability of this genome sequence provides valuable data for understanding Cronobacter sakazakii diversity and evolution.
- Further research is needed to reconcile the widespread presence of this strain in food with its infrequent clinical reporting.
Abstract:
Cronobacter sakazakii is a food-borne pathogenic bacterium that may cause severe illness in neonates and the elderly. We present the genome sequence of a rare strain (ST40, CC45), commonly found in multiple food processing facilities and in powdered infant formula and only indicted in a single clinical case.
