    Summary

The free scapular flap method is most recommended for penile reconstruction due to its high survival rate and patient satisfaction. This surgical technique offers a superior alternative compared to other flap methods for penis restoration.

    Area of Science:

    • Urology
    • Plastic Surgery
    • Reconstructive Surgery

    Background:

    • Penile reconstruction is a complex procedure to restore form and function.
    • Various surgical techniques exist, each with unique advantages and disadvantages.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the efficacy of three distinct methods for penile reconstruction.
    • Evaluate outcomes including flap survival, complication rates, and patient satisfaction.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 48 penile reconstruction cases between 2000 and 2012.
    • Utilized free scapular flap, pedicled superficial circumflex iliac artery skin flap, or anterolateral thigh skin flap.
    • Flap dimensions and urethral perimeter were standardized.

    Main Results:

    Related Experiment Videos

    • Free scapular flaps (n=21) had a 14% failure rate; 33% of prosthesis implants were exposed.
    • Groin skin flaps (n=21) had a 38% failure rate; 43% of prosthesis implants were exposed.
    • Anterolateral thigh flaps (n=6) had a 33% failure rate; no prostheses were used. Overall, 26/37 patients were satisfied.

    Conclusions:

    • The free scapular flap technique demonstrated the highest flap survival rate.
    • This method also exhibited lower complication rates and higher patient satisfaction.
    • Free scapular flap transplantation is the preferred method for penile reconstruction.
