Summary

Interface dermatitis (ID) presents as papulosquamous disorders, often mimicking lichen planus (LP). Accurate diagnosis requires correlating clinical presentation with microscopic findings.

Background:

Interface dermatitis (ID) is characterized by a specific inflammatory pattern at the dermo-epidermal junction.
Various inflammatory skin diseases share overlapping histological features, complicating diagnosis.
Lichenoid tissue reaction is a key microscopic feature of interface dermatitis.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the clinical and microscopic features of interface dermatitis.
To assess the diagnostic accuracy of histological examination in interface dermatitis.
To evaluate the concordance between clinical and pathological findings in interface dermatitis.

Main Methods:

Analysis of 125 skin biopsy samples from dermatology outpatients.

Evaluation of clinical presentations and histopathological features of interface dermatitis.

Main Results:

Interface dermatitis predominantly presented as papulosquamous disorders.
Lichen planus (LP) and its variants constituted the majority (63.2%) of ID cases.
High clinicopathological concordance (87.2%) was observed, with discordance in 12.8% of cases.

Conclusions:

Histological evidence of interface lichenoid inflammation alone is insufficient for diagnosing LP.
Clinicopathological correlation is crucial for a definitive diagnosis of interface dermatitis.
Accurate diagnosis of interface dermatitis necessitates integrating clinical and microscopic data.
