Background:

  • Propolis, a natural resin, has shown potential in stimulating immune responses in younger subjects.
  • Limited research exists on the immunomodulatory effects of propolis in aged populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of Brazilian green propolis on the immune system of aged mice.
  • To evaluate dose-dependent effects of propolis on various immunological parameters.

Main Methods:

  • Eighty aged Kunming mice were divided into control and three experimental groups receiving different doses of Brazilian green propolis (83.3, 157.4, 352.9 mg/kg.bw) for 4 weeks.
  • Analysis included total polyphenol, flavonoid, cinnamic acid, and artepillin-C content of propolis.
  • Measured parameters: splenic NK cell cytotoxicity, T lymphocyte proliferation, antibody-producing cells, peritoneal macrophage phagocytosis, ear swelling response, and serum levels of IgG, IgM, hemolysin, and cytokines.

Main Results:

  • Propolis treatment enhanced peritoneal macrophage phagocytosis at higher doses (157.4 and 352.9 mg/kg.bw).
  • Ear swelling response, an indicator of cellular immunity, increased across all propolis-treated groups.
  • Specific antibody production and IgG levels were significantly elevated in mice receiving propolis, particularly at doses of 157.4 and 352.9 mg/kg.bw.

Conclusions:

  • Brazilian green propolis demonstrates a beneficial effect on both innate and adaptive immune responses in aged mice.
  • Propolis may serve as a potential natural supplement to support immune health in aging individuals.
