Hepatitis

78
Hepatitis is an inflammatory condition of the liver most commonly caused by hepatotropic viruses (A–E), though non-infectious causes such as alcohol and drugs also exist.Hepatitis AHepatitis A virus (HAV) is a non-enveloped RNA virus of the Picornaviridae family. It is primarily transmitted via the fecal-oral route, typically through ingestion of contaminated food or water. After ingestion, HAV enters the bloodstream through the oropharynx or intestinal epithelium and reaches the liver.

Viral Hepatitis I: Introduction

18
Viral hepatitis is an inflammatory condition of the liver caused by infection with hepatotropic viruses, most commonly hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E. Despite variations in structure and transmission, all viruses mentioned infect hepatocytes and provoke immune responses that can hinder liver function. Additionally, some non-hepatotropic viruses can also lead to hepatic inflammation.Hepatitis A VirusHepatitis A virus (HAV) is transmitted through the fecal–oral route, typically by ingestion...

Diseases of the Liver and Gallbladder

2.0K
Liver and gallbladder diseases are a significant health concern, with prominent conditions including cirrhosis, hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and gallstones. Jaundice is a common manifestation of liver and biliary disease.
Cirrhosis is characterized by the scarring of hepatic lobules in the liver, which are replaced by fibrous tissue, affecting the liver's normal functioning. NAFLD, on the other hand, is caused by an excessive build-up of fat in the liver, not...

Summary

Hepatitis A incidence in Poland slightly increased in 2012, with most cases imported. Continued surveillance is vital due to a susceptible population.

Area of Science:

  • Epidemiology
  • Public Health
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Hepatitis A remains a public health concern globally.
  • Understanding the epidemiological trends of Hepatitis A is crucial for effective control strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the epidemiological situation of Hepatitis A in Poland during 2012.
  • To identify key trends and risk factors associated with Hepatitis A transmission.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of annual bulletins on infectious diseases and vaccinations in Poland for 2012.
  • Review of individual case reports and outbreak investigations of Hepatitis A.
  • Data collected by Epidemiological Departments and analyzed by the Department of Epidemiology at NIPH-NIH.

Main Results:

  • 71 cases of Hepatitis A were reported in Poland in 2012, with an incidence of 0.17 per 100,000 population.
  • The incidence varied regionally, with the highest in Śląskie (0.35/100,000) and lowest in Łódzkie and Podlaskie (0.08/100,000).
  • Imported cases accounted for 52.1% of all cases, and five outbreaks involving 11 cases were recorded.

Conclusions:

  • A slight increase in Hepatitis A incidence was observed in 2012 compared to the previous year, though overall endemicity remains low.
  • The low vaccination rates and decreased incidence contribute to a growing susceptible population, posing a risk for future outbreaks.
  • Despite the current favorable epidemiological situation, continuous monitoring and analysis within the national surveillance system are essential for Hepatitis A control.
