Background:

  • Dynamic hyperinflation (DH) post-lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) is understudied.
  • The relationship between DH reduction and exercise improvement after LVRS remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the changes in dynamic hyperinflation after LVRS.
  • To determine if reductions in DH correlate with enhanced exercise performance post-LVRS.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 42 emphysema patients undergoing LVRS.
  • Measurement of inspiratory capacity and calculation of end-expiratory lung volumes during cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET).
  • Assessment of DH using the EELV/TLC ratio at matched metabolic isotimes.

  • LVRS significantly reduced DH (EELV/TLC) up to 36 months post-surgery.
