Summary

Four eye balancing techniques were compared for accommodative equalization. Prism-dissociated red-green balance and Humphriss immediate contrast methods showed the most interchangeable results, indicating high agreement.

Background:

  • Accurate accommodative equalization between eyes is crucial for binocular vision.
  • Various techniques exist for balancing the accommodative state, but their comparative efficacy is not well-established.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the outcomes of four different accommodative balancing techniques.
  • To determine which methods provide the most consistent and interchangeable results for refractive error correction.

Main Methods:

  • Sixty subjects underwent refractive error determination using retinoscopy and subjective refraction.
  • Four balancing techniques were applied: alternate occlusion, prism-dissociated blur balance, prism-dissociated red-green balance, and Humphriss immediate contrast method.
  • Interocular spherical difference (IOSD) was analyzed using statistical tests including paired t-tests, ANOVA, and ICC.

Main Results:

  • Alternate occlusion and prism-dissociated blur balance showed the lowest mean interocular spherical difference.
  • Prism-dissociated red-green balance and Humphriss immediate contrast method demonstrated the lowest 95% limits of agreement.
  • The highest correlation and intraclass correlation coefficients were observed for prism-dissociated red-green balance and Humphriss immediate contrast method.

Conclusions:

  • All four balancing methods produced highly similar outcomes.
  • Prism-dissociated red-green balance and Humphriss immediate contrast technique are interchangeable for accommodative balancing.
  • Other tested pairs of methods also yielded nearly interchangeable results.
