Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe potential applications of CAS in orthopedic oncology.
  • To report preliminary outcomes of CAS in a large cohort.
  • To assess CAS for orientation, planning, and margin control.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective cohort study of 130 oncological CAS procedures (Nov 2006 - Mar 2013).
  • Procedures categorized into image-based intralesional treatment, image-based resection, image-based resection and reconstruction, and imageless resection and reconstruction.
  • Mean follow-up of 32 months.

Main Results:

  • Intralesional treatment: 1 inadequate curettage, 1 recurrence in 63 cases.
  • Image-based resections (42 cases): 40 R0 margins, including 16/17 pelvic resections.
  • Image-based reconstruction achieved 0.9 mm mean accuracy; imageless CAS aided resection planning and prosthesis reconstruction.

Conclusions:

  • Computer-Assisted Surgery (CAS) is a developing technology in orthopedic oncology.
  • Preliminary results indicate high rates of R0 resections.
  • Low short-term recurrence rates observed for CAS-assisted curettage.
