A novel two-step method created nickel phosphide (Ni2P) nanoparticle films on titanium (Ti) for efficient hydrogen evolution. The Ni2P/Ti electrode shows excellent catalytic activity and stability in acidic solutions.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Electrochemistry
- Catalysis
Background:
- Developing efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution is crucial for clean energy technologies.
- Nickel phosphides are promising but often require high-temperature synthesis, limiting their application.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a low-temperature synthesis strategy for nickel phosphide (Ni2P) nanoparticle films on titanium (Ti).
- To evaluate the performance of the synthesized Ni2P/Ti electrode as a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) cathode in acidic media.
Main Methods:
- A two-step low-temperature strategy was employed to fabricate Ni2P nanoparticle films on a Ti plate.
- Electrochemical characterization was performed to assess the catalytic activity, stability, and Faradaic efficiency of the Ni2P/Ti electrode for HER.
Main Results:
- The Ni2P/Ti electrode demonstrated remarkable catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution in acidic solutions.
- It achieved nearly 100% Faradaic efficiency and superior stability.
- The electrode required low overpotentials of 138 mV and 188 mV to reach current densities of 20 mA cm(-2) and 100 mA cm(-2), respectively.
Conclusions:
- The developed low-temperature synthesis is effective for creating highly active Ni2P/Ti HER electrocatalysts.
- The Ni2P/Ti electrode offers a promising alternative for efficient and stable hydrogen production in acidic environments.
