New copper(II) complexes with bulky bis(pyrazolyl)acetate ligands were synthesized. A specific complex with cis-aquo ligands exhibited enhanced catecholase activity, highlighting the role of these ligands in catalysis.
Area of Science:
- Coordination Chemistry
- Organometallic Chemistry
- Catalysis
Background:
- Bis(pyrazolyl)acetate ligands offer tunable steric and electronic properties for metal complex synthesis.
- Copper complexes are widely studied for their catalytic applications, including oxidation reactions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize and characterize novel six-coordinate copper(II) complexes incorporating bis(3,5-di-t-butylpyrazol-1-yl)acetate (bdtbpza).
- To investigate the influence of ancillary ligands on the structure and catalytic activity of these copper complexes.
- To explore the catecholase-like activity of the synthesized complexes in the oxidation of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (3,5-DTBC).
Main Methods:
- Synthesis of five mononuclear mixed-ligand copper(II) complexes with bdtbpza and various N-heterocyclic or aliphatic ligands.
- Thorough characterization of the synthesized complexes using spectroscopic and analytical techniques.
- Assay of catecholase-like activity by monitoring the aerial oxidation of 3,5-DTBC to 3,5-DTBQ.
Main Results:
- Successful synthesis and characterization of five copper(II) complexes: [Cu(bdtbpza)2(py)4], [Cu(bdtbpza)2(t-Bupy)4], [Cu(bdtbpza)2(pym)2(MeOH)2], [Cu(bdtbpza)2(eda)2], and [Cu(bdtbpza)2(tmeda)(H2O)2].
- The steric bulk of bdtbpza ligands directed a trans-positioning and O-bound monodentate coordination.
- A heteroleptic complex with cis-aquo ligands displayed significantly higher catecholase activity compared to other synthesized complexes.
Conclusions:
- The steric and coordination preferences of the bis(pyrazolyl)acetate ligand influence the structure of copper(II) complexes.
- Labile cis-aquo ligands are crucial for enhancing the catecholase-like activity of these copper complexes.
- The findings provide insights into the design of efficient copper-based catalysts for oxidation reactions.

Structural Isomerism
Isomers are different chemical species that have the same chemical formula. Structural isomerism of coordination compounds can be divided into two subcategories, the linkage isomers and coordination-sphere isomers.
Linkage isomers occur when the coordination compound contains a ligand that can bind to the transition metal center through two different atoms. For example, the CN− ligand can bind through the carbon atom or through the nitrogen atom. Similarly,...
