Abstract:
The present study was undertaken to assess the effectiveness of diversion therapy where bright colored sound producing rattles were used to distract the infants during injection. Experimental research approach, quasi experimental post-test only control group design was adopted in the study. Samples in the experimental group were given diversion therapy before during and after the injection. Pain assessment was done using Neonatal Infant Pain Scale during and after the injection. It was seen that there was a significant difference between the mean pain scores in the control and experimental groups with the mean difference of 3.18. The t-value was 14.76 which is highly significant at 0.05 level of significance. In the post injection pain score the mean difference and SD of control group was 4.21 +/- 1.34 and in the experimental group, it was 3.18 +/- 0.8. The t-value was 3.68 at 0.05 level of significance. Thus the study proved that the diversion therapy was effective in decreasing the pain level of infants receiving injection.
