Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Endocrinology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Polymorphic light eruption (PLE) is a common photodermatosis.
  • Previous studies suggest a potential association between PLE and thyroid abnormalities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinicoepidemiological characteristics of PLE.
  • To compare thyroid function tests (TFTs) in PLE patients versus controls.

Main Methods:

  • 100 PLE cases and age/sex-matched controls were enrolled.
  • Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels were measured for all participants.
  • Triiodothyronine (T3) and tetraiodothyronine (T4) levels were assessed in cases with abnormal TSH.

Main Results:

  • Thyroid function tests were abnormal in 25% of PLE cases, compared to 7% of controls.
  • Hypothyroidism (elevated TSH) was significantly more prevalent in PLE cases.
  • Abnormalities in T3 and T4 levels were also observed more frequently in PLE patients.

Conclusions:

  • Thyroid dysfunction, especially hypothyroidism, is significantly associated with PLE.
  • The findings suggest a potential shared genetic or immune basis for PLE and thyroid disorders.
  • Clinical evaluation and TSH testing are advised for PLE patients to identify associated thyroid conditions.
