A novel titanium template aids scaphoid reconstruction by precisely aligning bone fragments after non-union surgery. While initial tests showed variable accuracy, improved planning can enhance this technique for better scaphoid humpback deformity repair.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Biomedical engineering
  • Medical imaging

Background:

  • Scaphoid non-union with humpback deformity presents reconstruction challenges due to complex anatomy.
  • Intraoperative control during scaphoid reconstruction is difficult, impacting surgical outcomes.

Observation:

  • A custom titanium template was developed using 3D CT reconstructions and selective laser melting.
  • The template precisely fits proximal and distal scaphoid poles to guide fragment alignment post-resection.

Findings:

  • Simulated reconstructions in ten human wrists showed variable precision: 5 good (≤1.5 mm), 1 moderate (≤3 mm), and 4 inadequate (>3 mm).
  • Deviations were primarily linked to template design, suggesting a need for enhanced pre-operative planning.

Implications:

  • This template technology offers potential for improved accuracy in scaphoid reconstruction.
  • Refined pre-operative planning and template design are crucial for successful clinical application in treating scaphoid non-unions.
