Multiple Sclerosis l: Introduction

14
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that affects the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. It is an inflammatory demyelinating disorder and a leading cause of neurological disability in young adults.EpidemiologyMS commonly begins between 20 and 40 years of age and is twice as common in women. Its exact cause remains unclear, but genetic susceptibility contributes, with higher risk in first-degree relatives and identical twins. A greater...

Summary

Sudden deafness can occur during acute relapses in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. While some patients experience hearing recovery after remission, others may have partial or no recovery.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a significant neurological disorder impacting young adults, characterized by demyelination.
  • Sudden deafness is an infrequent but reported symptom in patients with multiple sclerosis.

Observation:

  • A retrospective study analyzed 405 multiple sclerosis patient records from 2011-2012.
  • Seven cases of sudden deafness associated with acute MS bouts were identified.

Findings:

  • Of the seven patients, six had a relapsing-remitting course and one had progressive MS.
  • Five patients presented with unilateral deafness, and two experienced bilateral deafness.
  • Hearing recovery was complete in four patients, partial in one, and absent in two. Audiometry confirmed severe hearing loss during acute episodes, with recovery in five cases post-remission.

Implications:

  • Sudden deafness can be a manifestation of acute relapse in multiple sclerosis.
  • While hearing loss may resolve with MS remission, complete recovery is not guaranteed.
  • Further research is needed to understand the relationship between MS-related deafness and specific neurological lesions.
