Thyroid hormone levels in elderly atrial fibrillation patients were similar to normal elderly individuals, but aging significantly reduced free T3 and altered TSH response compared to young men.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Geriatrics
  • Cardiology

Background:

  • Atrial fibrillation (AF) is common in the elderly.
  • Thyroid dysfunction can affect cardiac function.
  • Age-related changes in thyroid hormones are not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate thyroid hormone levels (free T4, free T3) and TSH response to TRH in elderly patients with AF.
  • To compare these findings with age-matched normal elderly subjects and young men.

Main Methods:

  • Evaluated free T4, free T3, and TSH levels before and after TRH administration.
  • Studied 35 elderly patients with AF, 35 elderly normal subjects (AN), and 36 young men (YN).

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • No significant differences in thyroid hormones or TSH response were found between elderly AF patients and normal elderly subjects.
  • Elderly individuals showed dramatically decreased free T3 compared to young men.
  • TSH response to TRH was significantly decreased in normal elderly males but similar in other subgroups compared to young men.
  • Conclusions:

    • Elderly patients with AF do not exhibit subclinical hyperthyroidism.
    • Aging is associated with decreased free T3 and altered TSH regulation.
    • Thyroid function in elderly AF patients is comparable to that of healthy elderly individuals.
