Background:

  • Clinical features of asbestos-related diffuse pleural thickening (DPT) are not well understood.
  • DPT is a significant consequence of asbestos exposure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between radiological findings of DPT and respiratory function.
  • To elucidate the clinical presentation of asbestos-induced DPT.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of medical data from 106 DPT patients (2005-2010).
  • Inclusion of occupational history, symptoms, smoking status, and respiratory function tests.
  • Radiological assessment using chest X-ray and computed tomography (CT).

Main Results:

  • DPT diagnosis occurred at a median age of 69 after a median exposure duration of 25 years and a median latency of 46 years.
  • Increased pleural thickness and extension on CT scans correlated negatively with percent vital capacity (%VC).
  • Costophrenic angle involvement also showed a negative correlation with %VC.

Conclusions:

  • Asbestos-related DPT has a long latency period and leads to substantial respiratory impairment.
  • Chest CT is recommended for assessing the extent of pleural thickening.
  • Chest X-ray is valuable for evaluating costophrenic angle involvement in DPT.
