This study isolated sixteen steroidal saponins from Tribulus terrestris, including seven new compounds. Three known saponins demonstrated significant platelet aggregation activity, highlighting their potential therapeutic value.
Area of Science:
- Natural Product Chemistry
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Tribulus terrestris is a medicinal plant with a history of traditional use.
- Steroidal saponins are a major class of bioactive compounds found in Tribulus terrestris.
- Understanding the chemical constituents and their bioactivities is crucial for its medicinal applications.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and characterize steroidal saponins from Tribulus terrestris.
- To evaluate the platelet aggregation activities of the isolated compounds.
Main Methods:
- Isolation of compounds using chromatographic techniques.
- Structure elucidation using 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry.
- Assessment of platelet aggregation activity in vitro.
Main Results:
- Sixteen steroidal saponins were isolated, with seven being previously unreported.
- The structures of all compounds were fully elucidated.
- Three known saponins showed significant potentiation of platelet aggregation.
Conclusions:
- The chemical diversity of steroidal saponins in Tribulus terrestris is extensive.
- Certain saponins from Tribulus terrestris possess notable bioactivity related to platelet function.
- These findings warrant further investigation into the pharmacological potential of these compounds.
