  • A study was conducted in a tertiary medical center in Israel during a Joint Commission International Accreditation (JCIA) process.
  • Two convenience samples of nurses (N=489) were surveyed before and after JCIA completion.
  • Data were collected using structured, self-administered anonymous questionnaires, with 89 paired responses for before-and-after analysis.

Main Results:

  • Post-JCIA, nurses reported higher rankings for leadership in quality improvement, their own quality control activities, and the contribution of computers to quality improvement.
  • Significant positive correlations were found between perceived leadership support, engagement in quality improvement activities, and the perceived impact of computerization.
  • Leadership commitment and computer use/skills explained 30% of the variance in the perceived contribution of computerization to quality improvement.

Conclusions:

  • This study is the first to demonstrate a link between organizational leadership and nurses' computer use for clinical care enhancement.
  • The Joint Commission International Accreditation process positively influenced nurses' appreciation of computerization for data management and care quality.
  • Strong leadership commitment is crucial for successful quality improvement initiatives involving healthcare technology.
