The Professional Nurse01:22

The Professional Nurse

6.5K
Professional nurses are not limited to bedside care and are taking roles of greater responsibility. A nurse should have a knowledge-based practice, including personal, theoretical, procedural, cultural, and reflexive knowledge. Additionally, nurses must be competent in cognitive, technical, interpersonal, and ethical/legal skills. Some of the best attributes of successful nurses include the following:

Ethical Standards I

1.5K
The American Nurses Association (ANA) created and implemented the first nationally accepted Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements. The Code of Ethics is a living document regularly updated by the ANA and establishes an ethical standard that is non-negotiable for nurses in all roles and settings.
The Code of Ethics provisions outline the nurse's duty to the patient, the healthcare team, the profession, and society. The Code's fundamental principles include advocacy,...

Obedience01:08

Obedience

26.1K
According to obedience research, we may harm others under the forceful pressures of an authority figure (Milgram, 1974). How about if the inappropriate orders were delivered with less force? The increasing interdependence between nurses and physicians compelled Hofling and his colleagues to explore nurses’ reactions to a potentially harmful medical request made by the perceived authority figure, the doctor (Hofling, Brotzman, Dalrymple, Graves, & Pierce, 1966). In this situation,...

Pharmaceutical Alternatives: Excipients and Impurities-Related Therapeutic Nonequivalence

239
Pharmaceutical products contain more than just the active drug; they also contain various excipients such as binders, solubilizers, stabilizers, preservatives, and other elements. In some cases, impurities or contaminants might be present. Traditionally, quality control in pharmaceuticals has primarily focused on the analysis of the active drug, often overlooking the impact of these additional components. The recent issue with heparin contamination by over-sulfated chondroitin sulfate, a...

Area of Science:

  • Pharmacy Education
  • Professional Competencies
  • Healthcare Standards

Background:

  • Current Thai pharmacy competency standards required revision to align with evolving societal needs.
  • Expert input was crucial for identifying areas for improvement in pharmacy practice.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose revisions to the existing Thai pharmacy competency standards.
  • To assess the perceptions of pharmacy practitioners and faculty regarding these proposed standards.

Main Methods:

  • A brainstorming session with nine pharmacy experts informed the revision process.
  • Revised standards were validated through a questionnaire distributed to 574 pharmacy practitioners and faculty.

Main Results:

  • The revised standards include 7 domains and 46 competencies, integrating and adding to current ones.
  • Respondents overwhelmingly supported the proposed competencies, with high rankings for ethics, pharmaceutical care, and communication.
  • Domain 1 (Practice Pharmacy within Laws, Professional Standards, and Ethics) was the highest-ranked domain.

Conclusions:

  • Pharmacy practitioners and faculty hold high expectations for graduates' competencies.
  • There is a strong encouragement for enhanced multidisciplinary collaboration to improve patient care outcomes.
