Background:

Food insecurity is a critical issue in remote Indigenous communities in Western Australia.
Understanding community store managers' perspectives is vital for effective policy development.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore remote community store managers' views on improving food security.
To inform health policy for remote Indigenous communities in Western Australia.

Main Methods:

A census of remote Western Australian Indigenous community store managers was conducted in 2010.
Telephone interviews gathered data on food insecurity, store challenges, and policy options.
Descriptive analyses were performed using SPSS.

Main Results:

High freight costs and irregular deliveries lead to elevated prices and limited food variety.
Poor store infrastructure, cold chain failures, and power outages compromise food quality.
Half of managers reported community hunger due to insufficient funds to purchase food.

Conclusions:

Food security interventions must address freight costs, transport, and demand for nutritious foods.
Community store managers offer crucial local knowledge for implementing food security initiatives.
Improving healthy food affordability is essential but challenging, given high unemployment and low incomes.
