Background:

The transition from registered nurse (RN) to nurse practitioner (NP) presents significant personal and professional challenges.
Understanding these transition experiences is crucial for supporting new NPs and recognizing their professional journey.

Purpose of the Study:

To conduct a concept analysis of the RN to NP transition.
To provide enhanced knowledge and clarity regarding the concept of transition into the NP role.

Main Methods:

Utilized Walker and Avants' framework for concept analysis.
Conducted a literature review of peer-reviewed journals.
Incorporated model cases from an Australian ethnographic study to illustrate transition attributes.

Main Results:

The RN to NP transition is a multifaceted process.
Individual factors and the attitudes of healthcare colleagues significantly influence the transition.
Mutual adaptation by both the NP and the healthcare team is essential.

Conclusions:

Successful RN to NP transition requires adaptation from both the individual and the healthcare team.
Failure to adapt can impede the NP's ability to enhance healthcare delivery.
