Skin Cancer01:30

Skin Cancer

5.2K
Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. It is primarily caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide, and its incidence continues to rise.
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): BCC is the most common type of skin cancer, accounting for about 80% of cases. It typically develops in...

Skin Diseases and Disorders

5.1K
Skin is the first line of defense and encounters a variety of microbes. Some pathogenic strains are often the cause of a broad range of infections of the skin and other body systems. These conditions can affect people of all ages and may have different causes, including genetic factors, infections, autoimmune reactions, environmental factors, and lifestyle choices.
Gram-positive Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp. are responsible for many of the most common skin infections. However, many...

Primary Lymphoid Organs01:16

Primary Lymphoid Organs

9.5K
Primary lymphoid organs are pivotal in the formation, development, and maturation of lymphocytes, the white blood cells that serve as the backbone of our immune system. This crucial function underscores their fundamental role in maintaining our overall health and immunity. The two primary lymphoid organs of prime importance are the red bone marrow and the thymus.
The red bone marrow is a soft, spongy tissue nestled in the interior of long bones such as the humerus and femur. It is the site...

Secondary Lymphoid Organs01:15

Secondary Lymphoid Organs

7.2K
Secondary organs, including lymph nodes, the spleen, and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT), work harmoniously to protect us from disease and infection.
The spleen is a vital organ in the lymphatic system, nestled in the upper left side of the abdomen. It is composed of two primary regions: the red pulp and the white pulp, each having distinct functions. The red pulp performs a significant role in blood filtration. It efficiently purges the blood of old or damaged red blood cells and...

Pulmonary Tuberculosis III

1.7K
Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious infection primarily affecting the lung parenchyma but which can also affect other body parts. TB can be classified based on disease development, presentation, and the affected anatomical site.
The first classification is based on the development of the disease, and it includes the following categories:

Papillary Dermis01:11

Papillary Dermis

5.8K
Dermis
The dermis might be considered the "core" of the integumentary system, as distinct from the epidermis and hypodermis. It contains blood and lymph vessels, nerves, and other structures, such as hair follicles and sweat glands. The dermis is made of two layers of connective tissue that comprise an interconnected mesh of elastin and collagenous fibers, produced by fibroblasts.
Papillary Layer
The papillary layer is made of loose, areolar connective tissue, which means the collagen...

    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Oncology
    • Hematology

    Background:

    • Extramedullary plasmacytoma of the skin is a rare cutaneous B-cell lymphoma.
    • It involves clonal plasma cell proliferation in the skin without multiple myeloma.
    • Fewer than 30 cases are documented in medical literature.

    Observation:

    • An 82-year-old male presented with asymptomatic, painful, red nodular lesions on his anterior chest wall.
    • Dermatologic examination revealed multiple, hard, smooth, vivid red nodules of varying sizes.
    • Diagnostic workup, including serum electrophoresis and bone marrow biopsy, yielded normal results.

    Findings:

    • The case presented is a rare instance of multiple primary plasmacytomas localized to the skin.
    • This diagnosis was made in the absence of systemic signs of multiple myeloma.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights the importance of considering rare cutaneous B-cell lymphomas in the differential diagnosis of skin lesions.
    • Further research into the pathogenesis and treatment of cutaneous extramedullary plasmacytoma is warranted.
    • Accurate diagnosis is crucial for appropriate patient management and prognosis.
