The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.

Background:

Accurate age estimation is crucial for legal and social contexts.
Dental age assessment provides a reliable method for determining an individual's age.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess developmental stages of mandibular teeth for dental age estimation.
To evaluate the correlation between dental age and chronological age in a South Indian population using the Willems method.

Digital Orthopantomograms of 332 subjects (166 males, 166 females) were analyzed.
Developmental stages of seven left mandibular teeth were assessed using the Willems method.
Dental age was calculated and compared with chronological age.
