Summary

The cemented ABG II hip prosthesis shows comparable revision rates and quality of life outcomes to other implants. This study found similar 5-year revision rates and health-related quality of life between cemented ABG II and control groups.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Biomaterials science

Background:

  • Cemented anatomic stems offer a promising alternative in hip arthroplasty.
  • The ABG II cemented stem shares design features with its uncemented counterpart.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the outcomes of cemented ABG II stems with a broader range of hip implants.
  • To evaluate the revision rates and quality of life associated with cemented ABG II use.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 141 cemented ABG II cases against 2,315 control cases from a regional hip arthroplasty register.
  • Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was employed to assess implant longevity.
  • Preoperative and 1-year follow-up WOMAC scores were used to evaluate patient-reported outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Patients receiving cemented ABG II implants reported significantly worse preoperative WOMAC scores.
  • At 1-year follow-up, cemented ABG II patients showed similar improvements in WOMAC scores compared to the control group.
  • The 5-year revision rate for the cemented ABG II was comparable to the overall control group.

Conclusions:

  • Cemented ABG II prosthesis demonstrates comparable revision rates to a registry-based control group.
  • Health-related quality of life outcomes for cemented ABG II are similar to those observed in the control cohort.
