Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical and topographic corneal features in children diagnosed with glaucoma.
  • To compare corneal topography between eyes with childhood glaucoma and age-matched controls.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional, observational study involving 58 eyes with childhood glaucoma and 28 control eyes.
  • Corneal topography was assessed using the Orbscan system.
  • Clinical features, including corneal opacification and Haab's striae, were documented.

Main Results:

  • Eyes with childhood glaucoma exhibited significantly higher posterior corneal elevation and irregular astigmatism compared to controls.
  • Haab's striae were present in 44.8% of affected eyes and correlated with increased posterior elevation and poor vision.
  • Best-corrected visual acuity was significantly correlated with cup-to-disc ratio, axial length, refractive error, astigmatism, and posterior corneal elevation.

Conclusions:

  • Childhood glaucoma leads to substantial increases in posterior corneal elevation and irregular astigmatism.
  • These corneal alterations are significant contributors to the visual impairment observed in pediatric glaucoma patients.
