Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Surgery
  • Canine Orthopedics
  • Neurology

Background:

  • Fenestration is a long-standing surgical technique for managing canine degenerative disc disease.
  • Its efficacy in treating current symptoms and preventing future episodes remains debated.
  • The procedure's scientific basis is questioned despite its widespread use.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To critically evaluate the role and efficacy of fenestration in veterinary spine surgery.
  • To discuss the advantages and disadvantages of fenestration for canine intervertebral disc disease.
  • To determine if fenestration should remain a standard surgical option.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature on canine intervertebral disc fenestration.
  • Analysis of the scientific evidence supporting the procedure's therapeutic claims.
  • Discussion of clinical outcomes and potential complications.

Main Results:

  • Limited scientific evidence supports the therapeutic benefits of fenestration.
  • Advancements in diagnostic and treatment modalities offer more effective alternatives.
  • The procedure may lack a firm scientific basis for continued use.

Conclusions:

  • Fenestration for canine intervertebral disc disease should largely be abandoned.
  • More sophisticated and scientific diagnostic and treatment methods are available.
  • A limited role for fenestration may exist in specific, carefully selected cases.
