Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Irreversible Electroporation (IRE) is safe for tumors near large blood vessels. This study found minimal adverse effects on vessel patency following IRE tumor ablation.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Interventional Radiology
  • Vascular Surgery

Background:

  • Irreversible Electroporation (IRE) is an ablation technique used for tumor treatment.
  • Vessel patency near ablation zones is a critical safety concern.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of Irreversible Electroporation (IRE) on the patency of blood vessels adjacent to the ablation zone.
  • To assess the safety of IRE for tumors located near or encasing large blood vessels.

Main Methods:

  • 101 patients underwent percutaneous IRE for various tumors between 2010-2013.
  • Contrast-enhanced CT and MRI scans assessed 158 vessels within 0-1 cm of ablation zones.
  • Vessel caliber, patency, and flow defects were analyzed post-treatment.

Main Results:

  • Only 4.4% of examined vessels showed abnormal changes (narrowing/thrombosis).
  • No significant association was found between vessel proximity to the ablation zone and adverse vascular events.
  • Mean follow-up was 10.3 months, with a mean vessel distance of 2.3 mm from the treatment zone.

Conclusions:

  • IRE demonstrates safety in treating tumors adjacent to or encasing large blood vessels.
  • The findings suggest IRE is a viable option for complex tumor cases involving major vasculature.
  • Further research is needed to confirm these safety and efficacy findings.
