Higher brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), a measure of arterial stiffness, is linked to intracranial saccular aneurysms. This finding may help in evaluating and screening patients for these aneurysms.
Area of Science:
- Vascular Medicine
- Neurology
- Cardiology
Background:
- A low ankle-brachial index (ABI) is a known risk factor for cardiovascular events.
- Arterial stiffness, assessed by brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), is a non-invasive marker.
- The relationship between arterial stiffness, ABI, and cerebral aneurysms is not well understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between ABI, baPWV, and intracranial saccular and dissecting aneurysms.
- To determine if intracranial aneurysms are linked to arterial stiffness and atherosclerosis.
Main Methods:
- Prospective study of 78 patients with intracranial aneurysms (saccular and dissecting) and age/gender-matched controls.
- Comparison of ABI and baPWV between aneurysm groups and controls.
- Analysis of ABI and baPWV in relation to aneurysm characteristics and subarachnoid hemorrhage.
Main Results:
- Hypertension and higher baPWV (>1400 cm/s) were significantly associated with saccular aneurysms.
- No correlation was found between the number of saccular aneurysms and ABI or baPWV.
- baPWV remained associated with saccular aneurysms after adjusting for hypertension and smoking.
Conclusions:
- Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) is associated with intracranial saccular aneurysms.
- baPWV assessment may assist in evaluating intracranial saccular aneurysms.
- baPWV could aid in developing screening strategies for patients with intracranial saccular aneurysms.
