Caffeine improved task performance by reducing reaction time and errors. It also enhanced specific event-related potential (ERP) components, supporting arousal-based amplification theories.

Background:

  • Caffeine is known to increase physiological arousal.
  • Previous studies showed inconsistent effects of caffeine on event-related potential (ERP) components in Go/NoGo tasks.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of caffeine on ERP components during a Go/NoGo task.
  • To determine if caffeine-induced arousal amplifies ERP component amplitudes.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study with 24 participants.
  • Participants received a 250 mg dose of caffeine or placebo.
  • An auditory Go/NoGo task was administered, with ERPs analyzed using principal component analysis.

Main Results:

  • Caffeine reduced reaction time and omission errors.
  • Caffeine enhanced Processing Negativity and P3b amplitudes for Go stimuli.
  • Few effects were observed on ERP components for NoGo stimuli.

Conclusions:

  • Caffeine improves response production and task performance in Go/NoGo tasks.
  • Findings support the hypothesis that caffeine amplifies ERP component amplitudes due to increased arousal.
