Summary

Pixel value analysis using Digora™ and Visualix™ imaging systems was ineffective for detecting external root resorption (ERR). Calcium quantification confirmed ERR, but digital image analysis did not correlate with resorption time.

Background:

  • External root resorption (ERR) is a pathological process affecting teeth.
  • Early detection of ERR is crucial for effective treatment and tooth preservation.
  • Digital radiography systems offer potential for quantitative analysis in dental diagnostics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of pixel value analysis from Digora™ and Visualix™ digital systems for early external root resorption (ERR) detection.
  • To correlate digital image pixel values with the severity of induced ERR.
  • To assess the diagnostic potential of these systems in identifying root structure changes.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty extracted human lower incisors underwent induced ERR using hydrochloric acid (10, 30, 60 minutes).
  • Digital radiographs were acquired using Digora™ and Visualix™ systems under standardized parameters.
  • Calcium concentration was measured using atomic absorption spectrophotometry to confirm ERR, and ImageJ software was used for pixel value analysis.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant difference was found between ERR induction time and pixel values for either imaging system.
  • A strong positive correlation (r = 0.8892; p < 0.001) was observed between ERR induction time and calcium concentration.
  • Pixel value analysis did not demonstrate efficacy in detecting or quantifying induced external root resorption.

Conclusions:

  • Pixel value analysis of digital radiographs from Digora™ and Visualix™ systems is not an effective method for the early detection of external root resorption.
  • The study highlights limitations in using current digital imaging pixel values for quantitative assessment of root resorption.
  • Further research may be needed to explore advanced image processing techniques for improved ERR detection.
