Summary

Middle ear osteomas are a rare cause of facial nerve weakness. Early surgical removal of these benign bone tumors can lead to recovery of facial nerve function.

Background:

  • Facial nerve weakness commonly results from Bell's palsy or cerebrovascular accidents.
  • Middle ear tumors are an infrequent cause of facial nerve dysfunction.

Observation:

  • A case of a 49-year-old woman with progressive facial nerve deficit is presented.
  • Otoscopy revealed a subtle middle ear lesion, confirmed by CT as an osseous tumor (osteoma).

Findings:

  • Surgical excision of the middle ear osteoma was performed.
  • Partial recovery of facial nerve function was observed post-surgery.

Implications:

  • Middle ear tumors, though rare, should be considered in the differential diagnosis of facial nerve weakness.
  • Prompt recognition and surgical intervention for these tumors can improve facial nerve outcomes.
