Background:

  • Fatigue is a primary cause of disability in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients, often posing management challenges.
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS/ME) is another prevalent cause of fatigue, particularly in middle-aged females, a demographic also commonly affected by MS.

Observation:

  • A retrospective study screened 64 MS patients for CFS/ME symptoms.
  • Nine patients (14%), all female, met the diagnostic criteria for CFS/ME, exhibiting symptoms not solely attributable to their MS.

Findings:

  • The study identified a potential coexistence of Multiple Sclerosis and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis in a subset of patients.
  • A significant percentage of MS patients screened also presented with symptoms consistent with CFS/ME, suggesting a possible overlap.

Implications:

  • Recognizing CFS/ME as a potential comorbidity in MS patients can lead to more accurate diagnoses and tailored treatment plans.
  • This finding may encourage a re-evaluation of fatigue management strategies for individuals with MS, considering the possibility of co-occurring CFS/ME.
