Summary

An aberrant frenum can cause gum recession and aesthetic issues. Surgical frenectomy using the Z-plasty technique effectively removes abnormal maxillary labial frenums.

Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Oral Surgery

Background:

  • Aberrant frenums can lead to gingival recession by hindering plaque control or through muscular pull.
  • These frenums also pose aesthetic concerns and can jeopardize orthodontic outcomes, particularly in midline diastema cases, leading to treatment recurrence.

Observation:

  • This case report details the management of abnormal maxillary labial frenums in two patients.
  • A 26-year-old male and an 18-year-old female were treated for this condition.

Findings:

  • The Z-plasty technique was employed for the surgical removal of the aberrant maxillary labial frenums in both patients.
  • This surgical intervention addresses the underlying cause of gingival recession and aesthetic irregularities.

Implications:

  • Frenectomy, specifically using the Z-plasty technique, offers a viable solution for managing aberrant frenums.
  • Successful frenectomy can prevent gingival recession, improve aesthetics, and enhance the stability of orthodontic treatment results.
