Background:

Scholarly activity is crucial for surgical residents, yet challenging for small community programs.
Accreditation requirements mandate resident involvement in scholarly activities.
Existing resources may not adequately support resident research endeavors.

Purpose of the Study:

To implement and evaluate a structured program to enhance surgical residents' scholarly activity.
To improve the quality and quantity of research projects, presentations, and publications.
To address the challenges faced by small community-based surgical training programs in fostering research.

Main Methods:

A step-by-step mentoring program was developed for surgical residents.
Two faculty mentors with expertise in education and scholarly activity guided residents.
The program focused on project development through to publication over a one-year period.

Main Results:

The number of publications and presentations increased from 6 to 28 within one year.
Implementation of the program led to a significant rise in scholarly output across all categories.
The structured approach positively impacted the overall number of clinical projects produced.

Conclusions:

A structured scholarly activity program is effective in increasing clinical project output in small surgical training programs.
One-on-one mentoring and education in research design and biostatistics enhance research quality.
Such programs can foster collaboration between residents and private surgical faculty.
