Retrovirus Life Cycles01:10

Retrovirus Life Cycles

42.8K
Retroviruses have a single-stranded RNA genome that undergoes a special form of replication. Once the retrovirus has entered the host cell, an enzyme called reverse transcriptase synthesizes double-stranded DNA from the retroviral RNA genome. This DNA copy of the genome is then integrated into the host’s genome inside the nucleus via an enzyme called integrase. Consequently, the retroviral genome is transcribed into RNA whenever the host’s genome is transcribed, allowing the...

Preventive Healthcare Services

2.2K
Preventive healthcare services keep people healthy via frequent check-ups, screening, and counseling. They primarily aid in disease prevention rather than treating an acute or chronic illness. Preventive treatment also keeps individuals productive and energetic, allowing them to work well into their retirement years. Examples of preventive care services include:

Sexually Transmitted Infections01:26

Sexually Transmitted Infections

1.8K
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are diseases transmitted primarily through unsafe sexual interactions. Bacteria, viruses, or parasites cause them and can result in severe health complications if untreated.ChlamydiaThe bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis is responsible for the disease Chlamydia, the most common STI in the United States. This peculiar pathogen requires human cells to reproduce, residing intracellularly. The initial infection often goes unnoticed because it typically does not...

Coronary Artery Disease IV: Preventive Measures

887
Effective preventive measures for coronary artery disease (CAD) focus on controlling modifiable risk factors, including cholesterol abnormalities and lifestyle changes.Cholesterol ManagementFirst, the Mediterranean diet and the American Heart Association advocate for maintaining low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels below 100 mg/dL, with a more stringent recommendation of below 70 mg/dL for individuals at high risk. LDL cholesterol, often termed "bad cholesterol," can lead to the...

Cancer Prevention02:59

Cancer Prevention

6.5K
Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer.

Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention01:26

Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention

12.5K
Health promotion allows a person to control the determinants of health, resulting in an improved health status. It enhances the quality of life and reduces premature deaths. Health promotion and illness prevention programs help people make beneficial choices to reduce the risk of disease and disabilities. There are three health promotion and illness prevention levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.
In primary prevention, actions taken before disease onset prevent the disease from...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Gerontology

Background:

  • Hispanic women aged 50 and over (OHW) are a high-risk, understudied minority group in the U.S. concerning HIV acquisition.
  • Limited research exists on their health, social characteristics, and sexual behaviors related to HIV risk.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify factors contributing to increased HIV risk among OHW.
  • To inform the development or adaptation of culturally and age-appropriate HIV prevention interventions for this demographic.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with 50 sexually active OHW in Miami, Florida.
  • Data were collected using structured questionnaires administered by bilingual interviewers.
  • Descriptive statistics were employed for data analysis.

Main Results:

  • The mean age of participants was 55.7 years; all were postmenopausal.
  • OHW reported average HIV knowledge and partner communication but also symptoms of depression and intimate partner violence.
  • Low perceived risk of HIV acquisition and a need for education on HIV prevention and aging were noted.

Conclusions:

  • OHW are demonstrably at risk for HIV infection.
  • This population has specific, unmet needs regarding HIV prevention strategies.
