Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if pairing desirable food with a high error rate can decrease impulsive choice in temporal decisions.
  • To examine the role of hunger in modulating this effect.

Main Methods:

  • Healthy women performed a Stop-signal task associating food cues with high or low error rates.
  • Intertemporal preferences for food were measured after the task.
  • Participants' hunger levels were controlled for.

Main Results:

  • Pairing food with a high error likelihood significantly decreased temporal discounting (reduced impulsivity).
  • This effect was modulated by hunger: lower hunger levels amplified the reduction in impulsive preference for error-associated food.
  • Participants showed reduced impulsive preference for food previously linked to high errors compared to food linked to low errors.

Conclusions:

  • Errors, as motivationally salient events, enhance cognitive control and avoidance learning.
  • Error-associated learning is effective in reducing impulsive choice for edible outcomes.
  • Contextualizing errors can be a strategy to mitigate impulsive behaviors related to food rewards.
