Pharmacy student experiences and program components were tracked longitudinally. Student intern hours varied, while relationships with faculty remained stable, but advisor interactions and elective availability were rated lowest.
Area of Science:
- Pharmacy Education
- Longitudinal Studies
- Student Experience
Background:
- Pharmacy programs require continuous evaluation.
- Understanding student progression is key to curriculum enhancement.
- Longitudinal data provides insights into evolving student needs.
Purpose of the Study:
- To collect longitudinal data from a pharmacy cohort.
- To assess student experiences throughout the curriculum.
- To evaluate specific programmatic components.
Main Methods:
- A cohort of 67 pharmacy students (Class of 2006) was surveyed.
- Data collected at the end of the first three professional years (PY).
- An extensive exit survey was administered during senior week.
Main Results:
- Pharmacy intern employment peaked at PY3 (88.1%) and declined by PY4 (65.7%).
- Ratings for Dean's Office Staff and faculty interactions were consistent.
- Lowest-rated components were faculty advisor interactions and elective availability.
Conclusions:
- Student data informs program assessment and enhancement.
- Longitudinal data collection is valuable for tracking changes.
- Interventions can be developed based on student feedback.
