Background:

  • Responsible conduct of research (RCR) training assumes consensus on scientific standards.
  • Little evidence exists for consensus on authorship, collaboration, and data management practices.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess if differences in RCR standards and practices stem from disciplinary variations.
  • Investigate faculty perceptions on teaching and learning RCR across different biomedical fields.

Main Methods:

  • Survey distributed to US faculty across 50 graduate programs in November 2010.
  • Included disciplines: microbiology, neuroscience, nursing, and psychology.
  • Addressed RCR standards, practices, and teaching/learning perceptions.

Main Results:

  • Statistically significant differences in RCR standards were found across the four disciplines.
  • However, actual differences were small, with effect sizes indicating practically significant variations in less than 10% of questions.
  • Intra-disciplinary variation in standards was comparable to inter-disciplinary variation.

Conclusions:

  • Disciplinary differences in RCR standards are less pronounced than often assumed.
  • The necessity for highly discipline-specific RCR training may be overstated.
  • Focusing on individual variations within scientific fields could be more impactful for RCR education.
