Design Example: Identifying the Locations of Monuments in the Field Using Global Positioning System Device

453
Surveyors use Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to measure the precise location and elevation of points on Earth. In a recent survey, GPS receivers were used to determine the coordinates and elevations of two park monuments. The process involved careful mission planning, data collection, and correction to ensure accuracy. The survey began with mission planning to identify optimal satellite visibility and minimize Position Dilution of Precision (PDOP). A geodetic control point...

Depth Perception and Spatial Vision

2.7K
Depth perception is the ability to perceive objects three-dimensionally. It relies on two types of cues: binocular and monocular. Binocular cues depend on the combination of images from both eyes and how the eyes work together. Since the eyes are in slightly different positions, each eye captures a slightly different image. This disparity between images, known as binocular disparity, helps the brain interpret depth. When the brain compares these images, it determines the distance to an object.

Area of Science:

  • Computer Graphics
  • Augmented Reality

Background:

  • Realistic outdoor Augmented Reality (AR) rendering requires sophisticated effects like shadows and accurate daylight interactions.
  • Existing techniques often focus on non-real-time rendering, leaving a gap in real-time outdoor AR solutions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose a unique technique for realistic real-time outdoor AR rendering.
  • To address the challenge of integrating virtual objects with real-world environments, considering dynamic lighting and shadows.

Main Methods:

  • The approach involves three phases: generating sky color based on sun position, employing Z-Partitioning: Gaussian and Fog Shadow Maps (Z-GaF Shadow Maps) for shadow generation, and integrating sky color and shadow effects on virtual objects.
  • The method accounts for specific location, date, and time to ensure accurate environmental simulation.

Main Results:

  • The proposed technique significantly improves the realism of real-time outdoor AR rendering.
  • It effectively simulates the interaction between sky colors, shadows, and virtual objects in outdoor AR systems.

Conclusions:

  • The developed technique offers a viable solution for achieving realistic real-time outdoor AR rendering.
  • This advancement contributes to more immersive and believable AR experiences in outdoor settings.
