Cultural barriers:
Differences in values, beliefs, religion, knowledge, and tradition can significantly impact communication. Awareness of nonverbal cues is critical, especially when conversing with a patient from a different culture. What appears appropriate in one culture may be inappropriate in another.

Coping Strategies: Problem Focused01:27

Coping Strategies: Problem Focused

Coping strategies are methods people use to manage, tolerate, or reduce the effects of stressors. These strategies involve both behavioral and psychological actions to handle stressful situations. One common approach is problem-focused coping, which aims to change or eliminate the source of stress rather than merely addressing its consequences. This method involves taking direct action to resolve the issue causing stress.
For example, consider a student who struggles to understand their...

Introspection

435
Introspection, long upheld as a reliable route to self-knowledge, involves examining one's thoughts, emotions, and mental processes. It underpins many psychological practices, from mindfulness meditation to psychotherapy and self-help strategies. However, empirical evidence challenges the accuracy of introspection as a means of understanding oneself.Limitations of Introspective InsightSeminal work by Nisbett and Wilson demonstrated that individuals are frequently unaware of the true causes...

Techniques of therapeutic communication I: Active Listening, Sharing Observations, Validation, and Using Touch01:15

Techniques of therapeutic communication I: Active Listening, Sharing Observations, Validation, and Using Touch

7.9K
The history of therapeutic communication can be traced back to Florence Nightingale, who emphasized the importance of developing trusting relationships with patients. She taught that the presence of nurses with patients results in therapeutic healing.
Therapeutic communication is not the same as social interaction. Social interaction has no goal or purpose and consists of casual information sharing, whereas therapeutic communication has a plan or purpose for the conversation. Therapeutic...

Summary

Alexithymia, difficulty identifying emotions, is linked to interpersonal problems in chronic fatigue syndrome and other chronic illnesses. These issues, not the specific condition, explain higher alexithymia scores in patients.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Medical Sociology

Background:

  • Alexithymia is characterized by difficulty identifying and describing emotions.
  • Interpersonal problems are common in patients with chronic health conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between alexithymia and interpersonal problems in primary care patients.
  • To determine if interpersonal functioning mediates alexithymia score differences across patient groups.

Main Methods:

  • 155 primary care patients were recruited: 52 with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), 52 with chronic cardiovascular/auto-immune disease, and 51 with minor medical conditions.
  • The Inventory of Interpersonal Problems and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale were used for assessments.

Main Results:

  • Patients with CFS and chronic cardiovascular/auto-immune diseases exhibited higher alexithymia scores compared to those with minor conditions.
  • Alexithymia correlated positively with cold/distant functioning and vindictiveness, and negatively with self-sacrificing behaviors.
  • Interpersonal problems explained the alexithymia score variations among patient groups.

Conclusions:

  • Alexithymia and interpersonal problems should be viewed as interconnected aspects of affect regulation.
  • Clinical assessments for alexithymia require concurrent evaluation of interpersonal issues.
  • Mentalization-based therapy is suggested for patients with alexithymia, interpersonal difficulties, and related chronic conditions like CFS.
