Summary

Postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) may improve locoregional control in gallbladder cancer (GBC). Elevated postoperative carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) levels are linked to poorer survival outcomes in GBC patients.

  • Optimizing adjuvant therapies following surgical resection is crucial for improving patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the efficacy of postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) in GBC patients.
  • To identify key prognostic factors influencing survival and recurrence in GBC.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 86 GBC patients undergoing curative resection and PORT.
  • Three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy with concurrent chemotherapy in 71% of patients.
  • Evaluation of locoregional control (LRC), disease-free survival (DFS), and overall survival (OS).

Main Results:

  • Five-year OS, DFS, and LRC rates were 42%, 36%, and 73%, respectively.
  • Isolated locoregional recurrence was observed in 8% of patients.
  • Postoperative carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) levels emerged as a significant prognostic factor for LRC, DFS, and OS.

Conclusions:

  • Adjuvant PORT demonstrates potential effectiveness in improving LRC for GBC.
  • Postoperative CA 19-9 levels may serve as a valuable surrogate marker for predicting survival in GBC.
