Ankle Joint01:10

Ankle Joint

3.4K
The ankle is formed by the talocrural joint (crural = leg). It consists of the articulations between the talus bone of the foot and the distal ends of the tibia and fibula of the leg. The superior aspect of the talus bone is square-shaped and has three areas of articulation. The top of the talus articulates with the inferior tibia. This is the portion of the ankle joint that carries the body weight between the leg and foot. The sides of the talus are firmly held in position by the articulations...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Total talus dislocation is a rare injury. This case report details successful early management of an open total talus dislocation with a medial malleolus fracture, avoiding avascular necrosis.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Trauma Care
  • Musculoskeletal Research

Background:

  • Total talus dislocation is a rare and severe injury.
  • Often associated with fractures and significant complications like avascular necrosis and infection.
  • Post-traumatic arthritis is a common long-term sequela.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report a case of open total talus dislocation with ipsilateral medial malleolus fracture.
  • To highlight the outcomes of early surgical intervention.
  • To assess the prevention of avascular necrosis in this specific injury pattern.

Main Methods:

  • Surgical debridement and reduction of the dislocated talus.
  • Combined internal and external fixation for fracture stabilization.
  • Early mobilization and clinical follow-up.

Main Results:

  • Successful anatomical reduction and stable fixation were achieved.
  • The patient demonstrated good early recovery.
  • No radiographic or clinical evidence of avascular necrosis was observed at follow-up.

Conclusions:

  • Early surgical management, including debridement, reduction, and combined fixation, can lead to favorable outcomes in open total talus dislocation.
  • This approach may help prevent serious complications such as avascular necrosis.
  • Aggressive early treatment is crucial for managing complex talus injuries.
