Open versus needle biopsy in diagnosing neuroblastoma

Background:

• Traditionally, open surgical biopsy is recommended before neuroblastoma treatment initiation in UKCCLG protocols.
• This study compares the diagnostic utility of open biopsy versus image-guided needle biopsy for neuroblastoma.

Purpose of the Study:

• To evaluate the effectiveness of open surgical biopsy versus image-guided needle biopsy in diagnosing and risk-stratifying neuroblastoma.
• To compare the tissue adequacy, diagnostic yield, and complication rates between the two biopsy methods.

• Retrospective analysis of medical records for new neuroblastoma cases from January 2002 to July 2013.
